ED FRINGE REVIEW Phil Wang, Philly Philly Wang Wang

★ ★ ★ ★

No one does deadpan and dry-wit quite like him.

Phil Wang, or "Philly Philly Wang Wang" as he affectionately calls himself, is one of only a few comedians this year to fully sell out their entire run before the Edinburgh Festival Fringe even began. Plus any extra dates that were added.

After a year away from the festival, Phil returns with a new confidence and assurance that's probably the result of high-profile television appearances on shows like Have I Got News For You? and Taskmaster not forgetting of course that viral video which poked fun at Tom Hiddleston's bizarre advert for food supplements.

Playing to audiences of 170 in the Pleasance Cabaret Bar, Phil's new show tackles the difference between male and female contraception, the 2018 World Cup (he realises how out of date this material is) and an early show-stealing breakdown of his ethnicity, proves he's not a minority.

But did Philly Philly Wang Wang live up to the hype? On the whole yes, only occasionally being let down by a weak structure which mean that some material ran out of steam before the routine was over.

No one does deadpan and dry-wit quite like him and it shines through in his latest effort. There's a certain confidence when choosing to watch Phil Wang perform that you don't get with many other performers, so if you see tickets available for a Phil Wang gig near you, book them! You won't be disappointed.

Phil Wang: Philly Philly Wang Wang runs until 25th August at 8pm at the Pleasance Courtyard (Cabaret Bar) with extra performances on the 17th and 24th at 11pm. Book tickets here.
