We now know what's occurin' in the final ever episode of Gavin & Stacey!
Back in May, it was announced that on Christmas Day 2024, the nation will bid a fond farewell to one of the most beloved comedies of all time, Gavin & Stacey. And with just over a month to go, the BBC has released a first look image, which has a nod to the series one image and sees James Corden, Mathew Horne, Joanna Page and Ruth Jones reunited as Smithy, Gavin, Stacey and Nessa.
It’s five years since we left Nessa down on one knee declaring her love for Smithy and asking him to marry her and a lot has happened since then. And we haven't got that long to wait until find out what!
Here's what we do know... in Barry, Bryn’s packing the Picasso in readiness for a trip to Essex, Stacey and Gavin are looking for new ways to spice up their seventeen year marriage and Gwen is behaving most strangely.
Meanwhile, Nessa’s started a new business venture and Neil the Baby’s about to begin an apprenticeship with his dad.
Over in Billericay, Pam is stressing out at the prospect of playing hostess, not helped by a newly retired Mick practicing his golf swings in the living room and there have been more ups and downs in Pete and Dawn’s relationship!
As we look forward to catching up with the Shipmans and the Wests for the very last time with one final trip to Barry and Billericay, will we find out exactly what did happen on that fishing trip?
If you cast your minds back to Christmas Day 2019, a record-breaking 11.6 million people tuned in live to watch the hit sitcom's return after 10 years, with that number rising to 18.5m after 28 days, making it the highest rating BBC TV programme (outside of sporting and national events) since records began in 2002.
When you consider the decline in TV viewing and the feeling that Christmas telly just doesn't deliver in the same way that it used to, it's incredible what this Gavin & Stacey special was able to achieve. So when you match its success with THAT cliffhanger, it's no wonder that millions of people have been left wanting more.
On being back on set, James Corden said "It felt incredible. I mean for a long time when Ruth and I were writing the show we actually didn’t know if it would ever come to fruition because really what we’ve always done is just write it for ourselves and then figure out if we think it might be good enough for an audience. It just felt so good to be back in a room with Ruth and then thinking we may have happened on a story which might be satisfying."
To which Ruth Jones added "It was very emotional, and very lovely. Like we were all saying goodbye to it together."
And as an extra treat for Gavin & Stacey fans, there'll be Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell, which promises to be an uplifting and touching documentary special which tells the story of one of Britain’s best loved sitcoms as it comes to an end after 17 years.
It'll chart the journey of a little-known sitcom that started life on BBC Three which, with its blend of relatable characters and infectious catchphrases, grew into a must watch show that captivated the hearts of the nation.
And it'll feature unprecedented access to creators James Corden and Ruth Jones as well as the cast and crew as they film the final episode together and they all say goodbye to this much cherished show.
Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell will also feature an array of celebrity fans who have their say on the show’s influence on British society and why they believe Gavin & Stacey the best show on TV.
Produced by Tidy and Fulwell73, Gavin & Stacey is created, written and executive produced by Ruth Jones and James Corden, directed by Christine Gernon, produced by Sarah Fraser and executive produced by Ruth Jones, Rhys John and David Peet for Tidy Productions and James Corden, Leo Pearlman and Ben Winston for Fulwell73 Productions.
Gavin & Stacey: The Finale will air Christmas Day at 9pm on BBC One
