The Emmy and Tony-winning actor and comedian Neil Patrick Harris has joined the cast of Doctor Who and will appear as part of the show's 60th anniversary.

Exactly who he'll be playing is being kept a secret, but Showrunner Russell T Davies did tease on Instagram that he's "the greatest enemy the Doctor has ever faced" and added in a press release issued by the BBC "It’s my huge honour to open our studio doors for the mighty Neil Patrick Harris… but who, why, what is he playing? You’ll just have to wait. But I promise you, the stuff we’re shooting now is off the scale. Doctor beware!"

News of Neil Patrick Harris' casting is the latest in a series of announcements about upcoming episodes of Doctor Who and follows the news that Ncuti Gatwa will play the new Doctor, Yasmin Finney will play Rose and David Tennant and Catherine Tate will return as the Doctor and Donna.
